Inform vs. Excite

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By John Follis excite v. 1 a: to call to activity b: to arouse to feeling 2 a: ENERGIZE b: to produce a magnetic field in 3: to increase the activity of 4: to raise to a higher energy level syn see PROVOKE A lot of marketing doesnt do the whole job. It informs, but doesn’t excite. The fact is, it doesn’t matter if you have the best product if you’re not getting prospects excited. If you don’t excite your prospect, you wont sell your product. So, how do you excite your prospect? Start by acknowledging that your prospect isnt just a prospect. Shes a person with emotions who doesnt respond with just her head. She responds with her heart, soul, and funny bone. As a marketer, you must tap into the right emotional and psychological nerve that gets your prospect excited. For example, when Canon wants to sell its new camera to families, theyll tout its high-tech features, but thats not ultimately how theyll sell it. Theyll sell it by associating those features with the things that we, as humans, care about … a childs first steps, a great vacation, or a 90th birthday celebration. When Chrysler targets NFL-watching guys with a spot for its new sports car, theres a reason they use quick cuts, heavy-metal music, and mention it goes 150 mph. Will you drive 150 mph? Doubtful. Does that still excite the macho male libido? Absolutely. Follis Fact #5If you wantem excited about your product, youd better getem excited about your marketing. My agency once created a campaign that got people so excited, they took to the streets. The client, Daffys, was an off-price fashion retailer. Our outdoor ad read: If you’re paying over $100 for a dress shirt, may we suggest a jacket to go with it? (The visual was a straight jacket.) Everyone who saw the ad loved it. Well, almost. Shortly after the campaign broke, an organization called The Alliance for the Mentally Ill informed us that straight jackets and mental illness were nothing to joke about. They demanded that we immediately pull the ads. We were shocked. So, after discussing it with our client, we concluded that The Alliance was overreacting. And, we respectfully told them so. Undaunted, they elevated the issue by bringing it to the attention of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, as well as the outdoor media companies who posted the ads. Mysteriously, our clients stores began receiving disturbing, anonymous calls. Eventually, the story even found its way to The New York Times — not that we minded. As if that wasnt enough, when my partners and I arrived at a major industry award show to accept for Best Outdoor Advertising, The Alliance members were there waiting for us. Angry picketers crowded the hotel entrance waving posters and flyers condemning both our ad, and our agency. Thankfully, things remained peaceful. Eventually, we did replace the ad, but not before our client got more press and sales than they’d dreamed of. The moral of this story is worth noting: Despite the fringe few who can, and probably will, make a stink about anything even slightly provocative, sales is always the best barometer of public opinion. Follis Fact #6Its better to upset a few people than bore them all. Consumers are bombarded with thousands of messages a day, so if a marketer cant cut through the clutter hes wasting money. Thats why it pays to be bold. In fact, I tell my clients that if a concept doesnt make them at least a little nervous, then its probably not that good. Bold does not mean irresponsible. A brand image is precious and should be handled accordingly. That doesnt mean being boring. The challenge is to get people excited, and a smart, bold effort will do that better, and for less money, than something innocuous and uninspired. As a rule, larger clients with a broad base are much more nervous about doing anything the least bit provocative. Seth Godin says, “Too often, big companies are scared companies. They work to minimize any variation including the good stuff that happens when people, who care, create something special.” These companies are layered with middle managers, steeped in corporate politics, and terrified of sticking their neck out over advertising that anyone might perceive as risky. They dont realize that no one is ever bored into buying anything and its a bigger risk to do something safe and boring. Regardless of size or corporate culture no marketer can afford to lose sight of the purpose of marketing: to reach, and motivate, as many prospects as possible. With that understanding its impossible not to offend someone, somewhere, about something. So, rather than ask; “Are we offending anyone?” you might want to ask, “Are we getting anyone excited?” 2005 John Follis. All rights reserved. The Dangers of Plastic Surgery

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Jeff Lakie There is very little in this life that comes without risk, and the dangers of plastic surgery are a prime example of this. Most of us have been reminded by elderly relatives that our lives could be cut short any day simply by crossing the street; this adage is usually quoted to remind us to live each day to the full, and to do the things that will bring fulfilment to our lives, despite the many risks inherent. While it is true that the sensible among us put the inevitable risks of daily life to the back of our minds in order, simply, to stay sane, a balanced life is perhaps knowing risks to pay attention to, and which to ignore. There is little doubt that the dangers of plastic surgery are multiple, but its popularity nevertheless continues unabated. These dangers, clearly, are for many people acceptable one, and plastic surgery seems to be something that offers potential benefits significant enough to plough on regardless. But there is also an element in the human condition that clings to the tenet that ignorance is bliss, that it won’t happen to me anyway, and perhaps there is something to be said for that belief. Constantly thinking of the possible dangers of life will only immobilise us with fear. We would never take a chance on anything; never seek to better ourselves, or our world. And while plastic surgery has its detractors as well as its advocates, surely even those opposed to the surgical alteration of a healthy body can applaud the willingness to take a leap of faith towards something believed in? They say that knowledge is power, and the making of an informed decision is only possible with all the facts to hand. Perhaps you will choose to continue on your desired route despite understanding the risks and dangers of plastic surgery, but you will be making a decision based on something real, rather than the foolhardy belief that things cannot go wrong. Wholesale Food Distributors

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Max Bellamy Wholesale food distributors are licensed to supply food items to retailers and large institutional clients. The food items in food wholesaling include groceries, packaged frozen food, fish and seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and meat products, dairy products that include butter, cheese, cream and ice cream, confectionary which include candy, potato chips, nuts and chewing gum. Most of the time, food is purchased and sold without any further processing. However, sometimes basic cutting, peeling and packaging processes are handled by wholesale distributors. Food wholesale distributors work from a warehouse or a business office because they do not entertain walk in clients and there is no need to display the food items. Food wholesalers can be merchant wholesalers who are primarily engaged in buying and selling groceries and grocery products. They can be specialty wholesalers who are engaged in the wholesale distribution of food items such as frozen foods, poultry products and dairy products. There are also miscellaneous wholesalers who are referred to as systems distributors specializing in food items like coffee, tea and spices. The other types of wholesalers are brokers who merely act as representatives and get a commission. They do not physically handle products. Apart from these types of wholesalers, there are also warehouse clubs where a retailer can visit and purchase products in bulk at wholesale prices. Food, being a perishable item, needs to be handled carefully and food distributors have to ensure quick turnaround of inventory. The warehouse infrastructure requirement for food wholesaling and distribution is based on the type of products stored. For example, food products like canned fish and ice cream require deep freezing equipment. Wholesale merchants maintain close relationships with their clients. The growth in wholesale food industry is tremendous and the outlook is promising. As long as the demand for processed, packaged and frozen food exists, the wholesale industry will be there to warehouse it, finance it and deliver it to retail and institutional clients. The Legal Interview Question: What Are They And How Do You Answer Them?

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Carl Mueller Id describe a legal interview question as one that might appear a bit unusual but is actually acceptable. Depending on the specific job you are interviewing for, the industry you work in, and depending on the employment laws that apply in your country or region, the wording of such questions and the ability of the interviewer to ask these sorts of questions might differ. Questions that you can typically be asked during interviews are certainly legal of course ie. questions related to your previous experience, skills, accomplishments. But what if you are asked a question that you might not be sure how to answer but is actually quite legal and is one that you need to properly answer if you wish to get the job? Here are some examples of subjects that I would classify as legal interview question material: Your ability to legally work in the country Depending on where you live, there might be some legalities regarding how an interviewer can actually word this question but in the cases Ive seen, it is certainly a fair and legal interview question. The company wants to know if you are legally able to work in the country and if not, are they going to have to help get your work papers and if so, how much will it cost and how long will it take? If they need to hire someone in the next few weeks and your work visa will require 3 months to process, they may not wait around for you. In my experience, this is an important and legal interview question faced by people who have just moved to a new country to work or are planning on moving to a new country to work. Questions about your educational achievements and/or relevant certifications or training Asking about your education and/or certifications isnt unusual of course but your future employer might actually ask to see proof of your degree or certification. I have seen some employers who will request a photocopy of educational achievements especially if the education is a specific requirement of the job and/or if theyve been burned by people lying about their level of education in the past. If your educational achievements are from a foreign country, you may also be asked for proof. Moral of the story? If you are a few credits short of a degree then you dont have a degree! Dont state that you have a degree if you havent completed one. I have seen so many job candidates state in their resume that they have a degree but word it in such a way that makes me quickly realize they dont actually have one. When I ask for clarification, they admit they are a few credits short of a degree. If your degree is pending or if you are in the process of completing it, state the expected date of graduation so there is no risk of confusion as to your level of education at the time of applying for the job. Dont get caught in a lie because when its found out, it will most likely ruin your chances at the job. Your ability and propensity to travel Some positions require a significant amount of travel and this is a typical reason why people burnout and quit jobs requiring their employers to hire a replacement. In other words, if travel is an important and significant part of the job, expect to field questions regarding your willingness to travel. Be honest. If they tell that you travel is 75% of the job and you really only want to travel 25% or less, what is the point in saying that this level of travel is acceptable? Ive seen people accept jobs where the high amount of travel tires them out quickly and causes them to quit. Your ability to work overtime, shift work and/or weekends Your work hours are certainly something that you want to get confirmed with an employer before you are hired without necessarily making it look like you are a clock-watcher and are trying to figure out exactly how many hours youll be in the office each day! Having said that, I have dealt with companies that do specify work hours that can be considered a little bit out of the ordinary, especially companies that work with divisions in other countries and/or time zones and might require you to work outside of the typical 9am-5pm work hours. Your criminal record (if any). This is certainly a very important question if you work for (or would like to work for) a company where security clearance is part and parcel of the position. Again, depending on where you live, there might be legalities regarding how the question can be worded but in my experience, this is a perfectly legal interview question. Local laws might dictate what constitutes a legal interview question and which questions are off limits. Some of these questions might be necessary depending on your industry and level of position. If you are interviewing for a job in a different country, you will need to gain the legal ability to work in that country first so this is obviously a concern for a potential employer if gaining this status might take you months or more. If you were interviewing for a position that involved security clearance, any criminal record would obviously be an important consideration for the hiring company. Before you attend an interview, try to have a clear idea of any possible legal interview question that you might be asked given the job you are applying for, and given the industry you work in. Healthy Diet Plan for Summer

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Bill Nadraszky Well it is that time of year again, you are a little pale and the spare tire is a little bit bigger than it was in the fall and now you want to lose some weight and look better in those skin showing summer clothes. What you need is a plan and a bit of a change in schedule. Here is a simple list of things that you can do starting today to make sure that you are buff and ready as the summer and summer activities come in a couple of months. Eat Smarter The key to a healthy diet plan is to eat smarter than before. Over the winter you may have been eating a little badly, keeping on track but cheating. Now is the time to start eating in a very structured and focused way. No matter how you have been eating you must now start eating every couple or three hours. Really this just means toad snacks, good for you snacks. Lets say that you eat breakfast at 8, lunch at 12, dinner at 6. Now all you have to do is add snacks (really just smaller meals) at 10 am, 3 pm and 8 pm. Now you must be wondering, what you should be eating. The next important thing is to be sure to eat smaller meals and small snacks. The idea of eating so often is that your body will be better able to use the food that you are eating and a side effect of this is that it will raise your metabolism. Raise the protein, drop the carbohydrates What you eat is the next thing that is important. You should get a good idea of what is a carb based food and what is a protein based food and we all know what is fatty and these high fat foods should be avoided when you are trying to lose weight. I said that you need to eat small meals but most importantly you need to make sure that you have lots of protein and less carbohydrates than you are used to. This may be initially harder than you expect but in the end this adjustment will pay great dividends in having a healthy diet plan for summer. Stay hydrated when you exercise and when you dont When you are working out you will want to of course drink water and sports drinks so that you can keep not only your liquids up but the magic of sports drinks like Gatorade is that they bring back the electrolytes that you are losing by sweating. Getting dehydrated will drop your energy and in the end will stop your body from functioning normally. These steps to a healthy diet plan will make a big difference this spring and summer to make you healthier and more fit. Bill Nadraszky is passionate about health and fitness. Anxiety And Panic Attacks - Are Anti Depressant Pills Effective?

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Joshua Poon In today’s fast-paced world, do most of the people find 24 hours a day enough to accomplish the tasks that they wanted to? More often than not, they may find that they do not have enough time. This lack of time, load and pressure of work creates anxiety and produces panic situations. The result is mind full of tensions and worries. All these factors combined cause loss of sleep, loss of health and other kinds of mental and physical illnesses. All these things combined drive a person to the use of anti-depressants and other medications. Anti-depressants have been quite popular in treating stress related diseases in the past and to an extent even now. Taking pills is a commonly observed scene across the world now. Nevertheless, is it the correct way out? Is there any other alternative to it? Millions of people across the globe have been taking anti-depressants for years and are if not completely satisfied. However, anti-depressants take at least a few weeks to act on our body and a significant number of people taking these drugs are not very satisfied. The biggest problem with the general physicians is that they have very little training in the field of anxiety and panic situations treatments. Thus, it does not become difficult only for the patient but also the doctor to prescribe drugs under such circumstances. The point here is that it is not difficult to deal with cases of high cholesterol or blood pressure or high blood sugar etc. the doctor can prescribe any particular treatment for any of these diseases because there are established standards. You can take a few pills and it will come under control. However, unlike all these depression and anxiety is a very complicated illness. It cannot be analysed in a matter of a few hours and tests. The treatment for such illnesses can go on for up to a few months or years and even the medication goes on for an equally long time. Treatment could be very clearly inferred from here, since the results for this kind of illness are not instantaneous. The important thing in dealing with such cases is the knowledge of the physician. The physician dealing with such kinds of cases must be well informed of the past and all the other related events in connection with the patient. He must also be well informed of the past illnesses and medication prescribed. It is the responsibility of the doctor that he must not make the patient entirely dependant on drugs. He should also encourage the patient to undergo psychotherapy as the main course of recovery and drugs should be used as a secondary curing agent. Latest trends have proven that when psychotherapy and drugs are used together, they have a far more beneficial result than with pills alone. In addition, in most of the cases of mild attack only psychotherapy should be prescribed. This would also help in keeping the patient away from otherwise almost addictive anti-anxiety, anti-panic drugs. Panic and anxiety lead to depression at a later stage and are the most common causes of suicides. Most of the teenage suicide cases have been largely due to the factors. As such, we do not see suicides as an innate part of depression but it is the end result in many a cases. Conclusion But at the end of the day it is up to you to decide whether you want to take these anti-depressant and anti-anxiety pills or not, but you must weigh the pros and cons of these medicines before taking any further steps. You must consult not just your doctor but also your parents, your friends, your spouse before making a final decision. Above all, you must be totally convinced of your state before going in for any kind of therapy. Joshua Poon is the webmaster and publisher of AnxietyPanicInfo.com. He had been counselling people with depression, anxiety and panic attacks. He also writes articles about self help, inspiration and personal development. Cordless Phone Batteries

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Emerson]Peter Emerson When shopping for cordless phone batteries, always keep in mind that compatibility is always an issue. You will need to choose the right ones for your particular cordless phone unit. And even when you find the right match, you still need to decide on the brand of the batteries. Cordless phone batteries come in nickel cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, lithium, and lead acid rechargeable types. The difference among these batteries lies in their susceptibility to “memory effect.” Batteries like nickel cadmium have a virtual memory that forces them to function at the same level of performance prior to recharging. Thus, it is important to fully discharge a nickel cadmium battery before recharging it to enjoy full efficiency. Lithium batteries, on the other hand, do not pose the same problem. They are also more lightweight. However, they are more expensive. As a rule, all batteries need to be charged fully before first-time use. This prolongs battery life and ensures good performance. Cordless phone batteries take longer to charge. You may have to leave them charging for 24 hours, even when your charger indicates that the batteries are fully charged only after 10 to 15 minutes. Cordless phone batteries, when given proper care and maintenance, can be used over and over again through a series recharging cycles for more than a year. When you are purchasing batteries, always ask for a warranty. You can extend the life of your batteries by discharging them fully and regularly before fully charging them. You may do this routine every two to three weeks. Afraid of wear and tear? Don’t be. Cordless phone batteries perform better when used often. In fact, when you do not use them, they drain on their own. So if you are leaving for a vacation, remember to remove the batteries from the phone and store them in a cool, dry place. When you come back, you need to fully charge them again before you use your phone. Childrens Playtime Party Fun

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Gail Leino Children love to have parties. Dont make them wait for a birthday to have a gathering of their friends, create an occasion. Set up a play date and make it a theme so they have lots of fun. A party supply store will have every character imaginable to choose from when deciding upon a theme. The paper products, decorations and favors can all coordinate under a character, color or idea. A party planner will help you with any questions you may have with your needs. Send out invitations to your guests. Make them addressed to the child itself so they get to open mail. Sometimes that is their favorite part of the whole deal! Include a picture of your child so that if they cant read, they will immediately know who its from anyway. The picture and an invitation usually mean a party in a childs mind! A childrens party will need decorations. Lots of colorful balloons and streamers to match your theme can be purchased from the party supply store. They will also have balloon weights, favor bags and trinkets to give away as prizes. If your childrens party involves lunch, make it simple. Most likely the kids will be too excited to eat anyway, so their favorites might entice them more. Chicken nuggets, fish sticks or regular old peanut butter and jelly make them run for the table the most. Add a handful of grapes or apple slices, and they are happy clans. Plan a couple of new games to try out. Use board games, hide and seek or puzzles. If they are playing well on their own with toys, you might just want to leave them alone and enjoy the break. If the other moms stick around, use the time to catch up on visiting. Wedding Shower Favors - Seed Packets

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Anna Hart Wedding favors are traditional. They originated in Europe many years ago as a thoughtful way of saying thank you to guests. Wedding shower favors do not trace their roots back as far, but are a growing tradition. Small trinkets that are hand-made or purchased should be chosen for their ability to convey your thanks. Wedding shower favors of seed packets are a creative and inexpensive way to convey that thank you. No matter what time of year you have your wedding shower, seed packets chosen from one of the groups below will be appropriate. Bird Seed Packets In many countries, wedding guests traditionally throw rice at the young couple as they hurry toward a waiting car. Rice was a sign of fertility, and although many people never thought of that, the fun of pelting the bride and groom with handfuls of the grain was common. When it was found that rice could be dangerous to birds that swooped in to clean up after the wedding, bird seed began to take the place of rice. Wedding shower favors of seed packets, made up of bird seed, are a way of telling friends ahead of time that you want to care for the birds. How to Prepare Wedding Shower Favors of Bird Seed Bridesmaids or friends giving the wedding shower can purchase wedding shower favors of seed packets ready filled or make them by hand. 1. Begin with small throw pouches made of tulle. Pre-made throw pouches may be purchased in a variety of colors. Or make your own tulle throw pouches. Match the colors to the wedding color scheme, or use a rainbow of pastel colors. Bird seed throw pouches are usually about 3 x 4, closed at the top with a drawstring in a matching color. 2. Wedding shower favors of seed packets can be filled with your own special blend of bird seeds that will appeal to the birds present at that season. Or purchase mixed bird seed at your local garden or hardware store. Filling the pouches will be easier with a favor creator such as those sold by companies that make throw pouches. 3. Attach tags that invite friends to carry the favors to the wedding and throw the bird seed in place of rice. Flower Seed Packets Wedding shower favors of seed packets are especially nice for a garden wedding. The bridal shower can be themed as the wedding will be, and flower seeds used as wedding shower favors. Any wedding shower theme, however, can be enhanced by the idea of planting daisies or forget-me-nots. If you choose daisies, invite guests to plant the seeds and watch the bride and grooms love for one another grow and blossom. If forget-me-nots are your choice, suggest that they be planted as a reminder that even though the bride is beginning a new life, old friends remain dear. How to Prepare Wedding Shower Favors of Flower Seed To make wedding shower favors of seed packets, follow these instructions. 1. Buy flower seeds in bulk. 2. Wrap suitable amounts of seed in cellophane, or pour seeds into 2″ x 3″ clear poly bags available in craft stores. 3. Tie the mini bags with ribbon in colors to match your theme. 4. Attach a small dried flower or silk flower for an accent. 5. Using white or pastel colored business card stock, print out directions for planting the seeds. 6. Attach a business card to each of the bags. Wedding shower favors of seed packets can also be purchased. Some are wrapped in clear plastic with an appropriate bridal shower label. Others are packaged in the usual envelopes, with a special wedding sticker. Matchbook Wedding Shower Favors of Seed Packets This unique wedding shower favor caught our eye while browsing the Internet. 1. Each seed packet resembles a large matchbook. 2. Inside is stapled a packet of wildflower seeds that attract butterflies. 3. The matchbooks measure approximately 2 1/4″ X 3 1/2″ and are printed on glossy photo paper. 4. The back of each matchbook features a word of thanks with an invitation to plant the seeds as a memory of the wedding. A Lasting Tradition Not that many years ago, there was a wedding tradition of seeds. Relatives of both bride and groom wanted to be sure the young couple had seeds to plant for food, so each family passed on some of their family garden seeds, ensuring that the new garden would be full and fruitful. It was a good tradition then, and could well become a lasting tradition. 2007, Anna Hart.
