Ask your potential surgeon how may plastic surgery procedures of your type they have done. Experience is a really important factor. Ask them to see before and after pictures of patients if they have them. Talk to them about what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure. So how do you ensure they use your calendar instead of someone else’s? Make your unique. Use an odd-shaped design. For instance, if you own an auto detailing shop you might design your calendar in the shape of a Ferrari. Or maybe, if you are a party supply retailer, you design your calendar in the shape of a balloon, with a string dropping down from the bottom of the calendar. Another way to make your marketing calendar unique is to personalize it for each customer. Suppose you have a list of Grade A customers you want to reward for their business. So as a Christmas gift you give them a calendar with important dates on it. But the important dates are important to them. In other words, their wedding anniversary, childrens birthdays, graduations, etc. Of course, the implied task is that you keep a running file of all your customers with this information in it, but you should be doing that anyway. Include photos of people in your community. Maybe they are prominent people or just regular people. Either way, you give your calendar a local, “down home” feel. Another way you can add value and make your calendar different from your competition’s is to have a contest - an art contest, photo contest, famous quote contest, whatever. It could be anything that will get your customers involved in designing the calendar with you and you have 12 winners. Of course, you don’t want to leave out the most important thing. Your logo and business name should appear on every page, either on the photo or design page, or on the calendar page with all the dates. Ask your customers to hang your calendar on their wall in their office building, retail shop, or other prominent location. The idea is to put it where their customers will see it and ask about it. One final thing: A great way to get your customers to display their calendar in a location where their customers will see it is to personalize it for their business. The Silent Treatment I think that its in human nature to become quiet when something is bothering us, rather than to talk about things. Most often, you find that you get and give the silent treatment when you are upset about something. I find that being silence is actually just a way for me to gather my feelings before I make any rash decisions or accusations. But what if you are receiving the silent treatment, what then? I suggest that attempt to contact the other couple and set up a time where you can all meet in a non-threatening environment. If you truly can not understand or imagine what is wrong, then you can even meet somewhere of their choosing. Make the silent couple as comfortable as possible. If youre receiving the silence from your partner, you can do the same. Of course, most partners are able to talk things over when they begin to feel upset. But if something has happened, make sure to find time to talk. Usually once you get everyone talking about what has been making them feel bad, you will be able to solve the issues and move on. By Trevor Johnson There are those that walk amongst us who have followed all the advice, diligently dieted and exercised with genuine effort for long periods of time, yet still fail to lose their excess weight. Even more heartbreaking for those of us who genuinely struggle with obesity are the accusations of sloth and laziness from those thin people who eat junk all day long and show no physical sign of their own gluttony. “Why can’t you just be like everyone else?”, they demand. “It must be all your own fault.” “After all,” they say in derisory voice, “Losing weight is easy. Just eat less and exercise more. If you don’t lose weight, you are just weak willed.” Every person who has never had a real problem thinks they know all the easy answers. All those underlying unwarranted generalisations we face from others just about every day of our lives is a little recognised yet very real and severe form of discrimination, based on the same types of wrong thinking as prejudice against race, skin color, creed, gender, and other well recognised forms of hatred. In fact, life experience has taught me that the less a person actually knows about obesity and weight loss, the more they think they know. I spent time a few years ago under the care of some of the most distinguished and knowledgable internationally renowned Professors researching weight loss and obesity from the University of Sydney and the Royal Prince Albert Hospital’s Obesity Clinic in Sydney, Australia. I will always remember what Professor Ian Caterson told me one day: “The more we learn about obesity, the more we realise how little we really understand and how much more there is to discover.” Would any of those permanently thin critics care to explain a man with whom I shared many physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions during my time on the program at the Obesity Clinic? He was normal down the left side of his body, though obese down the right side of his body only. Next time someone verbally berates you for carrying excess body weight and tries to tell you how easy it is to be lean & trim, try asking them what they would recommend to that man that some of the top obesity researchers in the world don’t yet know. Then, while your critic is looking dumbfounded and fumbling for some feeble explanation, hit them with a few more questions, such as: Why do large birth weight babies have a dramatically higher rate of obesity than normal birth weight babies? And, given the above, just what control do you think I’ve got over my birth weight? Do you know what your metabolic rate is? If not, why do you presume to think you know mine? Do you think everyone has identical norepinephrine levels? Oh, you don’t even know what norepinephrine is, huh? Why do some people gain weight during stressful times while other people loss weight, irrespective of their eating patterns? How do you expect an overweight person to even be capable of greater physical activity than a normal weight person? Name me five minerals (not vitamins) that are vital for hormonal function, and explain which of these hormones has a different effect on brain signals related to appetite and metabolism. Tell me what you know about Insulin Resistance Syndrome, what causes it, what its symptoms are, and how to treat it. What has the least nutrient value to the human body - (a) 100 calories of pure fat, (b) 100 calories of pure protein, or (c) 100 calories of pure carbohydrate? (By the way - Your critic will probably answer Fat. The correct answer is C. The human body actually requires fats and proteins for various metabolic and physiological functions. Pure carbohydrate has no known unique use in the human body as the body can convert either fats or proteins as required into blood glucose, as it does with carbohydrate.) Some of the most successful business people, scientists, philosophers and artists in the course of human history have struggled with obesity. Why do you think such successful and influential people who have changed the course of the world as we know it today are “weak willed”? When you see the jaw of your critic drop to the floor, as they turn pale and look like they’ve been hit by a runaway train, when their silence shows that their ignorance and prejudice has been thoroughly exposed, just calmly walk away. At this point, both of you now know that, even though you may carrying excessive body weight, it is your critic who has the bigger problem. By Ben Greenfield On Monday, July 3rd, an editorial appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The author of the article decided that there must be more to the growing obesity problem in America than the simple fact that people don’t exercise enough while eating too much. To back this statement, the editorial cited research from the International Journal of Obesity, which recently reported 10 other possible reasons that people get fat. Ready for the top ten countdown on why Americans are getting fatter by the minute? Here it is: 1. Not sleeping enough. Lack of sleep has been show to decrease levels of the hormone leptin and increase levels of the hormone ghrelin. So inadequate sleep can trigger your body to increase food intake and store fat. Research has shown that people getting six hours of sleep per night are 27% more likely to become obese than those getting seven to nine hours, and people who get only two to four hours of sleep are 67% more likely to become obese. Since just one hour can make a big difference, try hitting the sack a bit earlier, and you might not have to hit the gym quite as hard. 2. Endocrine disruptions. Basically, this refers to pollutants, toxins and chemicals in the Western diet that can decrease the body’s metabolism and increase fat storage. The answer to this problem is simple - eat as naturally as possible, attempting to avoid frequent consumption of processed or packaged foods. I would also recommend choosing organic foods for any product in which the outer skin is consumed, such as apples or cucumbers. 3. Temperature controls. The argument here is that technologies like air conditioning and central heating have replaced people’s natural, calorie-burning temperature responses such as shivering and sweating. Not sure about this one - but here’s a thought: if your house were more sweltering in the summer, would you be more likely to get “out and about” and engage in activities like swimming, boating, visiting the beach or going to the gym? And if you were colder in the winter, would you move around more to stay warm? 4. Less smoking. Cigarettes are an appetite suppressant. This is an interesting observation, but please - don’t take up a chain-smoking diet! 5. Medicines that cause weight gain. Certain prescription drugs used in the treatment of mood disorders, seizures, migraines, diabetes, and high blood pressure, as well as steroids, hormone replacement therapy, and birth control pills can cause a weight gain of up to 10 pounds a month. Common culprits include antidepressants Paxil and Zoloft, the antiseizure medication Depakote, diabetes drugs like Diabeta and Diabinese, the high blood pressure drugs Cardura and Inderal, and heartburn drugs like Nexium and Prevacid. 6. Demographic changes. As we grow older, our metabolism slows. The increase in middle-aged people has increased obesity rates, as has the increased diversity, since research has observed some ethnic populations have been higher obesity rates. This shouldn’t be used as an excuse…just a reason to show more self-control and engage in consistent exercise! 7. Maternal age. Older birth moms tend to have heavier children. This is probably a much smaller problem than what the children are actually being fed as they age. If you’re unhappy with your weight, and feeding your kids the same food you eat, they’ll eventually be unhappy with their weight, and unhealthy too! 8. Assortative mating. The reasoning goes something like this: an overweight or obese person is more likely to choose a similarly built individual as a mate, resulting in a higher percentage of big-boned children. This makes some sense, since the diet and lifestyle of an obese man or woman would be suppoted by an obese spouse or partner. But this should make it that much easier to go on a diet or exercise plan together, right? 9. Natural selection. This theory claims that a fat individual is equipped to outsurvive a skinny individual in times of need, such as famine. Unfortunately, the Western lifestyle doesn’t experience too much famine, and obesity is accompanied by many life threatening problems such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease, so I don’t think this is a valid reason. 10. Genetic influences on pregnancy. An obese ancestor could result in an obese grandchild through a mechanism such as a “fetally driven positive feedback loop”. The next person who walks into my personal training office using this as an excuse will be doing some treadmill time. All kidding aside, I acknowledge that many individuals are more genetically prone to weight gain and obesity. The problem is that I often observe these people using this as an excuse or crutch, and subsequently consuming large amounts of fatty and sugary foods, while spending very little time in active health pursuits. Based on this top ten list, I’d like to sum up in one sentence how you can fight your expanding waistline: “Get an adequate’s night sleep, then stay active throughout the day while increasing consumption of natural foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts, and decreasing consumption of pharmaceutical medications, processed and packaged foods.” There you have it!
